Meet the FOODITY innovators: EcoTrace

In today’s fast-paced world, making informed choices about what we eat can feel overwhelming. But what if there was a way to simplify that process while supporting a healthier and more sustainable food ecosystem? EcoTrace, one of the winning projects from our first open call, offers just that.

Through an innovative data-driven app, it empowers individuals to make conscious food decisions while addressing challenges around food sustainability and data sovereignty — in line with our mission at FOODITY to drive meaningful change in food systems.

The project’s multifaceted approach includes developing the app itself as well as rigorous data collection and analysis, educating users on food and data ethics, and fostering greater transparency in the food industry.

“Our goal is to empower individuals to make informed, environmentally friendly food choices, thereby contributing to healthier food systems. Ultimately, we hope to achieve a broader understanding and adoption of data privacy standards and foster a significant shift towards sustainable eating habits”, the team affirms.

Facilitating sustainable and nutritious food choices

At its core, EcoTrace leverages the power of data and cutting-edge technology to guide users in making informed food choices that align with their dietary preferences, health goals, and environmental concerns.

Some of the app’s standout features are:

  • Sustainability insights: It provides detailed data on food products’ sustainability and carbon footprint, helping users to understand and reduce their environmental impact.
  • Event-sourcing scheme technology: An innovative feature that offers unparalleled transparency and traceability, strengthening the accountability of food producers and providing consumers with trustworthy data on the origin and impact of their food.

In essence, EcoTrace is not just an app; it’s a holistic solution to tackle some of the most pressing issues of today’s food and data sovereignty landscape by empowering consumers to make choices that benefit them and the planet.

Below, Manos Lekakis, one of its team members, explains EcoTrace in a nutshell:

"Why EcoTrace? Imagine going to your local retail shop and being able to confidently choose the products that not only benefit your health but have also been produced or procured in a sustainable way and align with your values of sustainability."

The EcoTrace team

EcoTrace comprises six multidisciplinary professionals from two Greek organisations:

Poios Einai To Afentiko?

Poios Einai To Afentiko? (PETA) is the Greek member of a European collective consumer initiative dedicated to empowering individuals to take control of their food choices. PETA members include more than 4.000 agri-producers and more than 17 million consumers in 10 EU member states.

Their unique business model revolves around creating products from the farm to the table, allowing consumers to participate in every step of the process through crowdsourcing tools, including survey tools and a mobile app. With PETA, consumers have the freedom to set their own criteria for their food choices, and they can witness how each choice impacts producer remuneration, the environment, and society as a whole.

When asked how being part of FOODITY will benefit the project, the team says it will greatly amplify its impact and help them advance their technology.

"Being part of FOODITY will provide us with a valuable platform for collaboration and innovation, enabling us to integrate and refine our solution.
