The objectives

of the FOODITY programme

in a nutshell

To fund 12 pilots that will develop innovative solutions demonstrating the potential of data-driven innovation in food and nutrition while guaranteeing the user's full control and ownership over their personal data.

To provide state-of-the-art tools/software components as building blocks and other technical resources respectful of personal data sovereignty for developing novel data-based food and nutrition systems.

To encourage the development of data-sharing practises, including data commons and open science, in the food and nutrition domain, thus encouraging innovation.

To attract top talent innovators for the development of the pilots, involve food systems stakeholders (e.g. producers, processors and retailers) in expressing their data needs to be more competitive and achieve a fairer distribution of wealth, and engage citizens in the development of the pilots, allowing them to express their needs and raise their concerns for their data rights when using data-driven solutions for food and nutrition.

To raise citizens' awareness in exercising their data rights and how they can use them to create an effect in nature-positive food systems.

Phases of the

FOODITY programme

We will develop our pilot development programme in three phases. The first one will focus on implementing the pilot projects. The second one on maximising their impact. The programme will end with an award ceremony where the winning pilot projects will benefit from an additional €7,500.

Our data storage

management system

Enabling citizens to become aware of their data is central to our vision, as it allows them to control how it is used and where it is stored. We have developed a data management architecture to protect and properly store data, which we will require the selected FOODITY innovators to use. The FOODITY datalake will store data (apart from users’ personal data, the management of which will be the responsibility of the pilots concerned), and the dataU will process and manage it.

The FOODITY dataU is a GDPR-compliant, cloud-based, distributed platform for secure data sharing. It allows full control over data, including with whom it is shared and for how long.

The service can be used to share data between citizens (data owners) and third-party services (data processors) or between two companies in accordance with their non-disclosure agreements.

The FOODITY datalake provides a centralised repository that makes data accessible for stakeholders and researchers while allowing them to perform different analyses — from temporal trends to user behaviour.

All data entered adheres to GDPR compliance, ensuring the protection of citizens and providing valuable information for applications in areas such as business intelligence and analytics.

Selected FOODITY innovators will be given training and mentoring on how to use our unique data management architecture.

Keys

to the programme

Our FOODITY pilot development programme is structured around two calls for proposals we will publish in the second semester of 2023.

From the applications we receive, we will select 12 (6 in each open call) beneficiaries, the FOODITY innovators, with the most promising pilot project proposals for developing the next generation of data-driven solutions for food and nutrition respectful of users’ personal data sovereignty, for a 12-month programme.

The pilots will demonstrate the potential of users’ personal data in health and nutrition solutions to contribute to more just and environmentally friendly food systems.

They will benefit from added-value services, including financial support (up to 187.500€ per beneficiary), one-to-one mentoring, training, group coaching and technical support to use the infrastructure and core components of the programme, as well as assistance in assessing the individual impact of each pilot with respect to its users.

At the end of the programme, the FOODITY innovators will carry out an Impact Assessment of the results obtained by their pilot projects regarding the perception of end-users control over their personal data. They will also receive support by connecting them to different ways of sustainability, ranging from VCs to training on equity-free funding.

FAQs

Eligibility

No, partners can be from the same country.

No, corporates are not eligible for this call. Only startups and SMEs are qualified, both in terms of technical partners and social innovation actors. FOODITY applies the European Commission definition of SMEs, which can be found here.

Yes, universities fall under the category of “research and training institutions”. Also note that universities which were partners on the first Open Call are welcome to apply again, provided that the team and proposed solution are different.

Generally speaking, companies are required to show proof of VAT registration (please refer to the Guidelines for more details). However, there are cases in which companies may be exempt according to the country they are operating in. FOODITY will be requesting official information to justify this should the given applicant be selected to the programme, as well as proof of SME existence.

Applicants from Hungary will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. It is advised that if you are an entity registered in Hungary, to speak with your National Contact Point before applying.

Budget

No, there are no requirements on budget allocation within a given consortium. It must be decided internally on an appropriate budget per partner while keeping in mind that costs must be logical and justified.

Indirect costs are the sum of all categories as stipulated in the Guidelines, calculated from A, B, C and D. Project costs are the sum of A, B, C, D and E (all).

Subcontracting is not allowed. We expect that consortia contain all the required knowledge, skills and expertise to implement their proposed solutions.

Technical

No, the minimum TRL is 4 and any proposals that fall under this minimum will be automatically deemed ineligible. Any applications in which the TRL is above 6 will also be automatically deemed ineligible.

The FOODITY Pilot Programme is focused on bringing products and services to market, however, we understand that if entering the programme at TRL 4, for example, it’s unrealistic to reach TRL 7 by the Programme’s end. We desire advancement to TRL 7 but it is not a requirement. In general, it is expected to advance from the starting TRL.

The components differ in their accessibility. It is advised to read carefully through Technical Annex 1.1 for more information about the licensing.

Prior experience with the components is not necessary. Technical support will be available throughout the pilot programme to assist in their use. Components four and five (reference Technical Annex 1.1) are already available online under their respective licenses, however, the other components are only available during the pilot programme.

The data will remain publicly available post-project (see also question 14 below). The datalake is intended to also continue post-project for 2 years after the end of the project at least, however, the business model to do so after that period is still being considered. In addition, several European initiatives are being explored to connect the datalake once FOODITY concludes.

The IP developed by the sub-grantee remains theirs, however, it is important to understand that this project is being funded by the EU under open science principles.

The solution developed is expectedly multifaceted/multilayered (i.e. the architecture will consist of various parts, components, libraries, APIs, etc.). The initial €150.000 is public money, and therefore it is our expectation that those that benefit from it, also provide back to the community.

Given this, it is our requirement that one or more parts (layers/ elements) can be made available back to the community without jeopardising the market/commercial value of a given solution/product. For those that are fully aligned with the open source initiative, we encourage that the complete solution be made available using the appropriate open source licenses.

The dataU does not organise data. This is purely for achieving clear consent according to GDPR regulations so that data can then be shared as desired. Therefore, the dataU allows for sharing between data processors.

An API can be used to connect the sub-grantee’s data platform with FOODITY’s datalake. Please contact us at opencalls@foodity.eu for more details.

Other

There is no standard amount of time a given application takes to complete. It depends on how far developed the proposed solution is, how well the Guidelines have been understood, as well as the evaluation criteria, and the applicant’s experience with EU funds. It is advised to start as soon as possible to avoid rushing through the proposal.
