FOODITY | Food and nutrition data-driven solutions respectful of citizens' data sovereignty

The FOODITY Recipe Book: A celebration of food, culture, and responsible digital innovation across Europe

We are excited to share the FOODITY Recipe Book, a collection of 28 delicious recipes, personal stories, and reflections from our project partners and wider community across 12 European countries. More than a cookbook, this publication brings together food, culture, and responsible digital innovation, showing how tools such as meal planners and nutrition apps influence our eating habits and wellbeing.

At its heart lies a simple idea: citizens should have full control over their personal data, especially when using digital services that shape how we cook, eat, and make food-related decisions. Through inspiring recipes and insights, FOODITY Recipe Book highlights the values that have guided FOODITY from the beginning, empowering people to understand their data, make informed choices, and support healthier, more sustainable food systems.

Food, data and the FOODITY community

Across Europe, the FOODITY community continues to show how food traditions, creativity, and digital innovation can work together to inspire healthier, more sustainable choices. Yet many people still lack access to their personal data, which would help them better understand their food habits, nutritional needs, and the environmental impact of their food and nutrition-related choices. Much of this information sits within the digital tools we use every day — in recipe apps, meal planners, and nutrition trackers — often without clear explanations of how that data is handled or stored.

This is where personal data sovereignty becomes essential. When individuals can access, manage, and understand their own food and nutrition data, they are better equipped to make informed decisions that support both their well-being and the planet. At FOODITY, we believe that protecting personal data is not only a requirement under GDPR but a way to empower citizens and encourage more transparent, trustworthy digital food systems.

The FOODITY Recipe Book was created with these principles in mind. Developed by our FOODITY team, innovators, and community members, it showcases digital food and nutrition platforms that respect personal data rights, practical resources that promote awareness of data sovereignty, and a collection of European recipes that celebrate diverse cultures and mindful eating.

"We’re proud to share this Recipe Book, which reflects the values and objectives of the FOODITY project. This work has been developed by our community with the goal of raising awareness of the importance of personal data sovereignty and to provide some FOODITY flavour in any cooking adventure.

On behalf of the FOODITY partners, thank you to those who contributed to this book and the many project activities that inspired it. Enjoy the recipes — and be mindful of your data!"

28 recipes from across Europe

The FOODITY Recipe Book brings together contributions from 28 members of our community, featuring dishes from 12 European countries: Italy, Serbia, Spain, Greece, Germany, Ukraine, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Hungary, Türkiye, and Austria.

This collection showcases the geographical and cultural richness within our network and reflects how food traditions and digital innovation can coexist. The recipes range from family favourites to modern reinterpretations, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options that reflect Europe’s rich culinary diversity and the growing interest in healthier, more sustainable eating.

What the FOODITY community says about food, data & sustainability

The recipes in this book highlight how food connects us, and how data-driven innovation can promote both healthier lifestyles and more sustainable food systems.

Many contributors reflected on how their dishes have evolved over time: some were handed down through generations, while others were adapted using digital food and nutrition tools, including those developed within the FOODITY ecosystem (by our Open Call 1 and Open Call  2 winners).

These tools demonstrate how AI, open data, and privacy-by-design principles can be used to deliver nutritional insights, personalise diets, support public health, reduce food waste, and better understand the environmental footprint of our meals, all while ensuring that citizens’ personal data remains under their control.

As digital food and nutrition services continue to grow, it becomes even more important for users to stay informed about how their data is handled. The Recipe Book encourages everyone to take simple steps: choosing trustworthy tools that comply with GDPR, staying mindful of the information they share, regularly checking privacy settings, reviewing data permissions, deleting data that is no longer needed, and looking for trust seals or certification labels.

Understanding the value of personal data, and the rights that come with it, is key to navigating today’s digital food landscape responsibly.

About FOODITY and our community

FOODITY is an impact-driven Horizon Europe project involving seven partners across Europe. Together, we are creating a dynamic ecosystem of digital food and nutrition solutions that respect citizens’ rights to personal data sovereignty.

This Recipe Book was created thanks to contributions from:

  • FOODITY project partners
  • FOODITY innovators selected through our open calls
  • The partners and innovators from our sister project, DRG4FOOD
  • Data4Food cluster partners
  • Experts and researchers from our wider community

Together, we are shaping a future where data-driven digital tools support healthier and more sustainable food systems — and where citizens have both the knowledge and the power to make a real difference — for themselves, their communities, and the planet.
