MyNutri

Your Personal Shopper for Healthy and Sustainable Food

Overview

The challenge

The MyNutri project aims to enable citizens to make informed, individualised decisions when purchasing food and to improve eating habits and ethical food consumption by providing customised insights into food products based on users’ health concerns.

The solution

MyNutri is a mobile application that empowers citizens to make informed decisions during their shopping experiences, customised to their health profile, while also supporting sustainable food choices. The citizen takes a photo of the product being considered for purchase, and the app delivers, within seconds, two scores for the photographed food: an individualised health score and a carbon footprint score.

MyNutri also includes a carbon footprint scoring system that evaluates the environmental impact of each food item based on factors such as agricultural practices, transportation, production methods, and waste management. The app recommends lower-impact alternatives to promote sustainable choices and highlights seasonal, locally-produced options. This dual focus on health and sustainability empowers users to make informed decisions that benefit both their well-being and the environment.

Citizen Engagement

We are involving a group of over 200 consumers in Spain through CNTA’s platform MundoSabor. The ultimate goal of this study is to understand the potential end users of the MyNutri app (market research and concept testing), their consumption/eating habits, and their level of awareness of food composition and the impact of certain ingredients on their health.

Additionally, the app will be validated in a real-world environment with actual consumers to ensure the user experience is accurate and to identify potential improvements.

Activities carried out (February 2025): Survey (N = 109): Participants completed one survey to provide feedback on the MyNutri app and to analyse their eating/lifestyle habits.

Activities being carried out (May 2025):

  • Survey (N = +100): Assessing consumers’ prior knowledge about food labelling and their shopping/eating habits.
  • Focus Group (N = 20): Evaluating consumers’ prior knowledge or involvement in their diet, especially understanding the impact certain ingredients can have on their health.
  • In-depth Interviews (N = 10): Validating the app through a pilot test where consumers will use the MyNutri app in a real-world environment and subsequently provide their feedback.

DataU and FOODITY components

In our project, the FOODITY DataU plays a pivotal role in promoting data sovereignty and enabling effective personal data management. It aligns seamlessly with the core vision of the FOODITY Programme: to return control of health, food and nutrition data to citizens. By empowering users to decide what personal data they share and with whom, DataU brings value to our app — not only by enhancing transparency and user trust, but also by ensuring seamless compliance with GDPR requirements.

In addition to DataU, our app integrates the Foodity component “Food Product Identification from Photo”, which leverages the Open Food Facts API to retrieve detailed nutritional and ingredient information from barcodes or food images. This component offers users immediate access to comprehensive product data and helps them make data-driven choices about the food they consume.

Lessons and recommendations

MyNutri has been designed to be intrinsically aligned with the FOODITY overall goals. It falls within the area of shopping experiences, to improve citizens’ choices of food products in terms of health and sustainability, and has an educational component by providing users with evidence-based knowledge about the nutritional content of food products and the impact of ingredients on health.

Recommendations

To broaden adoption and accessibility, especially among data scientists, backend developers, and researchers, DataU should provide a Python SDK. Python is one of the most widely used languages in data-driven fields, and offering an SDK would make it significantly easier to integrate DataU’s functionalities — such as consent management and secure peer-to-peer data sharing — into existing applications and workflows.

A well-documented Python SDK would lower the technical barrier, foster community contributions, and accelerate integration in real-world scenarios, particularly in academia, startups, and public service platforms.
