We are thrilled to announce the official launch of FOODITY (FOod and nutritiOn Data-driven innovation respectful of citizen’s Data SovereIgnTY), an ambitious project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. Over the next three years (January 2023 to December 2025), FOODITY aims to revolutionise the food and nutrition landscape by creating a European ecosystem of digital solutions prioritising health, sustainability, and citizen data sovereignty.

Building a healthy and sustainable food system

With food systems responsible for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and the prevalence of obesity as one of Europe’s leading causes of premature death, the need for transformative change in our food systems is evident. At FOODITY, we aim to address these challenges by harnessing the power of data and technology to empower citizens to make informed choices that support healthier diets and more sustainable and resilient food systems.

Unlocking the potential of personal data

We are convinced that data plays a crucial role in transforming food systems. Therefore, we aim to challenge the limitations imposed by closed platforms and tools (e.g. wearable devices and software applications) that restrict citizens’ rights to personal data sovereignty and transferability. By ensuring a dynamic ecosystem of digital solutions that respect citizens’ data rights, we will demonstrate how increased control over personal data can positively change our food systems.

Data-driven innovation for better food systems

Our 2M€ pilot development program will fund 12 data-driven solutions that demonstrate the potential of innovation in food and nutrition. These solutions will ensure that users maintain full control and ownership of their personal data, respecting their rights to data sovereignty. Moreover, they will tackle key priorities outlined in Food 2030, the EU’s research and innovation policy for building better food systems by 2030. These priorities include nutrition for sustainable and healthy diets, food systems that support a healthy planet, circularity and resource efficiency, and innovation that empowers communities.

We will be looking for innovators to participate in the two open calls we will launch in the second half of 2023 — from research and technology organisations (RTOs) and universities to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), social innovation actors and training organisations. Selected beneficiaries will receive extensive support, including individual mentoring, technical, business, and legal training, and financial support of up to 187,500€ to develop their pilot projects.

United to make a change

Our FOODITY team, comprised of seven partners, is committed to making a tangible impact on how citizens use and control their food and nutrition personal data and pave the way for healthier and more sustainable food systems.

By leveraging data-driven innovations and empowering citizens with data sovereignty, we envision a future where personal choices contribute to a better future for people and the planet.
